Output to LPT1 in Win XP??

I am trying to help a friend who has a small business and is still running dbase (dos) (very old stuff). Anyway the report from dbase goes to lpt1. This was working fine under win98 but he bought a new Dell with xp home and is trying to move stuff over to it. The dbase print output doesn't happen. I tried getting into command mode and running "type textfile >lpt1" but this does nothing either.
The printer is HP laserjet 1100 on parallel port. The printer works ok under windows. I figure there is some trick to using lpt1 directly in xp.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am not positive about this, but xp does not have dos built into it and no drivers for dos printing, and that is why it don't work.

That must be it. I have an older Microtek scanner that runs off the lpt1 port. I'm using XP Pro and my scanner works fine using the same drivers I used under Windows 98SE.

Thanks for the link. It seems to be referring to a network printer and this one is local. I searched on MS knowledge base and the only hits referred to network printer. I'm confused!!!
