| IBM Thinkpad 760EL - CD drive not working on Windows 98
I have an IBM Thinkpad 760el and Windows 98 Second Edition is installed and working on it. It has a floppy disk drive which works fine. I have recently acquired a CD rom, but when I insert it into the Thinkpad it doesn't do anything it doesn't recognise that anything has changed and although the light comes on briefly when I boot the Thinkpad it won't read any CDs or show as a drive on explorer. Are there drivers I need to install? Can someone help me please?
Thanks |

Go into the control panels and run the add new hardware wizard. You might need a 98se CD if it needs any drivers from the disc. Try that and see if it works. |

Hiya, Thanks for your reply. I have actually run the add hardware wizard but it doesn't recognize the new hardware. I have a windows 98 SE CD but when I have this in the drive it just doesn't read it. I have a Windows 98 start up disk, but I don't know what to do with it.
Any more ideas? |

Well since that didn't work.. I suggest going into the BIOS of your laptop and checking to see if the BIOS sees the CD drive, and if there is some setting you need to change within the BIOS. |

Yes definitely as I have used it in another 760el laptop. That one's a whole other project, it used to have windows 95 on it and I wanted to put Windows 98 on it. I was a bit stupid and without really knowing what I was doing I decided to reformat the c: drive and now I'm not quite sure how to install the new operating system. Any help on that would be good too?
I just want to get at least one of these laptops in full working order, then I think you can ghost the spec from one laptop to another.
Any suggestions about any of the above? |

Tazzin,
Thanks for your reply, not exactly sure how to go into the BIOS and check for what you suggest, could you give me basic layman's terms on how I do this?
Thanks |

Turn the laptop off, hold down F1, and power it back on while holding F1 down. You should get into setup. There are several utilities there and should tell you if the CD drive is recognized.
Good luck. |
