I have been trying out the trials some companies offer of their Antivirus software. I have done this until now for about a month because I am still in doubt of which Antivirus program suites me the best. Since I was a Norton user for years, I got tired of their product for not being able to wrok as it should. Besides it slowed down my computer. Used Kaspersky Antivirus for 15 days I think, and I really liked it except its update manager that didnt seem to work for me in the startup of Windows XP. It didnt connect to the server for some reason. So I ended up updating the program manually, and it was a pain. Then I decided to try out Mcafee's Antivirus solution. Using it right now, and have been using it for some days. I really like it. Works great, updates as it should, automatically, and takes less resources than Norton did. The only thing I dont like about it is that it comes with Mcafee's Security Center, which IMO shouldnt be included with the software. My question is I have noticed many people in this forum dislike Mcafee, and I want to know why. I found it not to be perfect, but its a nice program that I dont mind using. Whats up with all Mcafee haters?

Its just gay. For one thing..all the products look stupid, lol...I mean even down to the packaging....Norton stuff just looks cooler.
I have seen McAfee mess up too many systems. Like this ladies system that we worked on in the comp store....the fault tag that the lady filled out read "installed McAfee and computer quit working".
And it seems they have that fault that plagues cheap software...once you install it..can you ever really uninstall it cleanly??? (see also "AOL" )
I also have bad flashbacks because my brain equates McAfee with all those wretched HP Pavillion machines from walmart a few years back....celerons with ME and 64m ram with mcafee....uhhgg, gives me shudders even now just thinking about it.

Well, I think people look back at Mcafee's older products, myself tried once Mcafee Antivirus 7.0 and boy that program gave me so many headaches using Windows XP. I had to finally format the whole thing since it kept freezing the computer every time it loaded. But this new version is much more stable and really works.
As for you commenting how it looks, well thats IMO not as important as how it performs. Norton may look cool, sweet, nice, beautiful, and all but what does that give when it doesn't find viruses, trojans, or worms, or finds them but cant fix/delete the files? Norton is IMO a nice program for newbies, for power users, its not an option.

I disagree....what good is having a virus free comp if it looks like a reject from the windows 3.1 days!!!!

Also, I dont really see norton missing too many trojans etc....have the magazines or any reviewers ever ranked McAfee as high as norton? |

Norton is a crappy solution regarding trojans. Its detection rate for trojans is one of the lowest you can find in any Antivirus program. Who gives if the program looks so cool?! I prefer using an ugly Antivirus that really works than using the most beautiful, with all the eye-candy Antivirus solution. And really saying that this:
looks like a program for Windows 3.1 you have to be blind, or just sarcastic.

I like McAfee Enterprise version very much. I especially like it combined with ePolicy Orchestrator, but that won't help home users.
It works well, the updates are fast too. As for other versions of McAfee, I have no idea.
As for how it looks, if it isn't obnoxious, then I don't care. |

I used McAfee in the late 90's and found that it used a huge amount of resources. Been using Norton since 2000 and have been very happy. I've never had any virus problems while using it.

Maybe, but it doesnt look like a program taken from Windows 3.1 at least. I really dont care how it looks, just if it performs well then I am happy. Stay with Norton and its eye-candy, I dont mind.
