I beta test for East Technologies and they have come out with a new version of their zero fill, and more, program called DiskSanitizer Gov V3 http://www.east-tec.com/sanitizer/download.htm
You can go from a single unchecked zero fill pass through to Gutmann.
I would go with the Naval RLL 3 pass setting to make sure nothing is recoverable from your HDD. This will disturb the magnetic flux of the media enough so recovery is almost impossible.
It really is a nice program and your can test it for free. |

Just for future reference: Your drive was set up as follows
C: primary partition- active
D: logical partition on top of an extended partition
you would need to remove the logical partition and then remove the extended partition
OR FOR EXAMPLE
if you had C,D,E and F
you would have the primary partition- C:
and one extended partiton with 3 logical partitions- D,E and F "If you remove partitions you can still get that data back?"
Yes the data can be recovered.

I've got sort of a related question. Does format /u do a zero write? If not, how is it different from a regular format?

There isn't a u switch in the format command. There is a v switch that allows you to name the volume.
Type format /? at a dos or command prompt for details of the format command. |

Did you sell the computer to the government? If not, I would not worry so much. I doubt there are many people out there who would even know how to, or even bother to, recover data from a formatted hard drive. |
