Besides most of the above...
. Opera isn't free - you pay for it either with cash or by having ads clutter your space.
. Go to http://www.sourceforge.org to find lots of freeware for linux and Win (and most other OSes). Some I like are Audacity (great audio manipulation tool) and Ultr@VNC - one of the better variants of VNC (see Real-VNC above).
. Another place is http://www.karenware.com for very useful Win utils. Be sure to DL the VRUN package and install it first if you don't already have it installed. All her utils are VBASIC and won't run without it!
. And Steve Gibson has some cool tools at http://www.grc.com . All his stuff is optimized assembly lang. Wicked small, fast and useful.
.bh.

this is a great thread, as much of my internet time is spent downloading free programs, hmm lets see

popup manager a good popup blocker

easy message a great instant messenger program, works with msn, aim, yahoo, etc. and is very small, i think about 500 kb, and uses very little ram

unfreeza simple program for making gif animations, very easy to use

download.comif you go to download.com, and when you search your thing, on the bottom of the page click license, and click free only, or something like that, and then it will show you all the freeware results for your search

hmm, lets see, well i'll probably be back with others in a bit

lets say you are on a Windows machine, and you need to compile a C program in unix.... log in, use your password, get into prompt, use gcc(is that the right command) and run that stuff

it gives the ppl somethin to maintain within our computer scienece departement

I bought opera because i liked it so much and wanted to support it's development, but I did use it with ads for a while and they are extremely non intrusive plain small text ads, they didnt even bother me.

A gentleman online by the name of Rainy has a couple really nice apps that I use on all my machines...

Rainlendar which is a really nice skinable desktop calendar/organizer.

RainMeter which is a great desktop system monitor which covers everything like CPU use, RAM use, network traffic, harddrive space, time, system uptime, etc.

Actually, Windows 98SE is free now, you can download it or whateva, doesn't matter, but it's free heh...once Microsoft stops offering support for an OS, which they did for 98 early this year, they no longer care about the OS, meaning that people can make copies of it and sell it if they wish, it doesn't really matter to them, heh...

Free Programs...one big one that I have been using on both my computer and my wife's for a while is Avast Antivirus Home Edition...probably the best AV I've ever used and it takes up hardly any resources during a full scan and during normal operating procedures. http://www.avast.com

enjoy...I'll come up with some more later, heh..
