compaq with xp changes from 32bit to 8bit every boot

i am working on a junky old compaq that has an xp upgrade on it, it will run 32bit fine but after every time it is booted it comes up in 32bit then flashes and changes itself to 8 bit, this machine is on the edge of being too slow for xp and only has 128meg ram with 8 of it shared for the video, i went thru msconfig and turned alot of stuff off i am installing windows updates at the moment, any help

check out his "xp services configurations"

basically he is showing that xp has a lot of junk running that u dont need running....I am thinking you can free up like 30mb of ram use by turning the junk off....

There r different columns..I use pretty much the "safe" column execpt I leave "system restore" enabled

some of the junk that can be disabled is

Alerter
Backbround Intelligent transfer service
clipbook
computer browser

etc etc

also you can turn off a lot of the visual "eye candy" that uses resources by right clicking "my computer"....click "properties"...."advanced"....beside "performace" click "settings"----then under "visual effects" uncheck most of that stuff....that will free up some memeory/resources etc.
