A puzzle need some thoughts

Better set back grab your favorite beverage. Then start reading.
The only change I have made on this box in the last week is to update Norton yesterday evening.
This morning when I booted up this box. I had three hard lockups in 10 minutes. (OOPPSS something isn't right here).
I did a system file check. It showed all of the EXE files as corrupted. (HHHMMM not good).
I did a virus scan off line. Didn't show anything. Then I did two different virus scans on line. Still nothing. (The plot thickens here).
Then I went back to SFC and started to replace files. I did about 10 of the first ones. Then I did a reboot. After the reboot I went back to SFC to check my work on the first batch. Guess what, it showed the same ones bad. (I am thinking oh S$&! now).
Went to boot disk did a through scandisk. No problems seen.
Back to SFC replaced the first ten agin. Rebooted. Run SFC agin. Same files showing bad. (lockups during this time also).
Then I went back to windows back up and restored my backup copy from a week and a half ago. (I went into safe mode for this).
The only files it didn't replace was IE Dat file,Cookies.dat and one other. (Can't remember the name. It was a DAT file also.).
Then I ran SFC agin. (about to wear this program out. LOL). I still show a couple of files bad but nothing I am worried about for now.
Anyone have any Ideas on this one. I haven't run into anything like this before.
My box spec's
Abit TH7-11 non raid
P4>1.9
512 meg Kingston ram
Lead Tek Geforce2 GTS
WD 30 gig 7200 rpm (not for long. SCSI U160 on the self).
Light On 12X burner
Sony 52X cd-rom
4 extra fans

All current drivers and updates except Norton. It is a week behind now. Don't think I am going to update it till I find out what caused this. I did get one error message on one lockup on a Norton file. The rest I didn't get any errors or BSOD's. Dr Watson couldn't grab anything eather.

try windoctor... it might be able to find some corruption somewhere.

and that's definately a unique problem...

Thats what I thought also. Glad I used winblows backup last week. First time I had used it.
Never thought of windoctor. I'll have to wipe the dust of that cd.

Is it possible that maybe along with some of the important files that got corrupted (thus causing your instability) that the settings file for SFC.EXE also got corrupted. The file that holds all the info about all the other files for SFC is "Default.sfc" in the Windows folder.

This would seem to explain why Windoze was not able to correctly determine if files are current versions or not.

I dunno...it's the only guess I got.

I just got done with windoctor. It found 6 dead end files with no programs. I had it remove the dead links. So I'll see how it holds up under a game here soon.
So far it is doing fine now. This box is the first time I have gotten
windows backup to work on a second partition. Saved me this time from a reload. Takes a while to restore 4.5 gigs of programs. LOL
Good thought OutPatient I might replace the cab file for SFC. That is about the only EXE file that didn't show up on the first system scan.
