| 64 bit windows xp beta and real player 10
I keep hearing that you can run 32 bit apps on 64 bit cpu's. When installing real player 10 on windows xp 64 bit version beta I get a message that real player can not install on the 64 bit version. too.
Seem like Microsoft needs to make windows 64 bit more backward compatible

oh yea great idea... pay 300 dollars or more for a server on a workstation?
You're suggesting he spend 300 dollars (or whatever it costs) to debug a problem?
It DOES have to do with the OS, its detecting a version number that it doesn't support. It probably doesn't even bother to look at the hardware, it just sees version 5.1.1.4242You wouldn't be suggesting 5 or whatever it is of XP, and that its not in its list of supported OS's.

32 bit applications WILL work on 64bit cpus that support 32bit OS's and applications (like Athlon 64). 64bit Windows WILL NOT support 32bit applications (at least from what i've heard). And I would say to use something other than realplayer (something that doesn't bug you to buy the full version), unless you REALLY need it for something. |

It will with the WOW (windows on windows) layer. But like the man said, it's beta.
Essentially the Athlon64 uses a bit of a hack to run in 64 bit mode without breaking 32 bit software. It runs in basic 32 bit mode by default and uses a flipped bit in one of the calls (I don't remember exactly what) to say "hey, this stuff is in 64 bit, do it that way." So when you're running 32 bit windows with 32 bit apps it's no problem, but 64 bit windows with 32 bit apps will be using the 64 bit calls all the time and so some provision needs to be made for it to "know" that a 32 bit call is coming.
What the problem really is probably just what vass said: realplayer's probably just to dumb to check for versions properly.

thanks for all the responses.
some of the stuff i listen to on the internet only stream in real player format. More of it is streaming in windows media player now than before. so i can use that some times too.
I duel boot between xp and xp64 so i still get to hear what I want. I'm just trying to do as much as I usually do on regular winxp on winxp 64 also thats all.
does any one know how to get real player to look for the xp 64 os? or maybe i should just check real.com and ask them that huh? |
