I have recently installed Windows XP on my first ever built computer. When I first installed it I didn't realize that I had a jumper on the drive limiting the apparent drive capacity to 32GB. ( Drive is a Seagate 120GB) I removed the jumper and rebooted. Thus the XP formatted the first 32Gb, and then allowed me to format the remaining 85GB of unallocated space as the F: drive through Disk Management. My question is this....How do I change the partition? If I want to lower the partition to like 10GB for the OS,etc. and the remaining as an F: drive, can I remove the partition a simple way, or do I need to do a complete reinstall of XP to fix this? It wouldn't let me do it in Disk Management. I just want to make sure I do it the right way. |

You can ether do a clean install and repartition then or you can use a third party program like Partition Magic 8 to resize your partitions. |

To resize you will need an external program. Partition Magic 8 is an excellent program that can do this for you. it's not free though and i don't believe there is a trial of it. If you can't use this program you will have to reformat windows.
EDIT: i'm always too slow beat me again. |

I'm not certain if it's true or not, but I remember reading somewhere that there is a way of repartitioning a drive within Windows XP....I have not been able to figure out how, yet, however...any one that can confirm this?
As for your question, yes to both of the previous responses....either repartition using Partition Magic or just do a clean install...good luck..

ya piece of cake, XP/2k is easy
right click my computer --> 'Manage'
Go down to disk management
in there you can create/delete partitions
Mind you its no partition magic, it only sees linux partitions as 'non-dos' and can't resize basic partitions.

A jumper setting on the hard drive limiting it to 32GB? I didn't know there was such a thing.

From the June 3, 2004 issue of Fred Langa's "Langalist"... Quote:
4) Free Partitioner/Imager
Fred, There are a couple of freeware programs for changing partition sizes. But here is the ONLY freeware program I've found which makes and restores an image of a drive or a partition: Partition Saving, at -- where else? -- http://www.partition-saving.com. The owner is Damien Guibouret, who is to be highly commended for his work. He regularly improves it, and it's now up to version 2.80.
In the FAQ page, he even gives graphs which show the effect of higher or lower compression, and CPU speed, on the time to run the program.
I have tested it, and can vouch for its reliability. Best wishes, Fred! ---Bruce Fraser
Thanks, Bruce. That's one that'll be worth checking out,. for sure!

can someone tell me the RIGHT way for me to wipe/erase/format the drive and then reinstall the Windows XP from scratch? Thanks for being patient with a newbie at this stuff. |
