Angry bittorrent, suggestions on how to increase dl speed

I've been using BitTorrent for a couple of months now and am getting a tad bit annoyed with the poor download speeds I have been getting. I usually average anywhere from 1kb/s - 5kb/s making downloads take FOREVER. My upload to download ration also seems a bit unfair as I usually average anywhere from 15kb/s to 30 kb/s. Usually at the end of a download I will have shared out anywhere from 3 to 4 times as much I received. I haven't really done much to try and figure the problem out because I have end of the year exams for school coming up. Any suggestions would be nice.

    System Specs:

    P4 1.2Ghz
    384M RAM
Win XP (all windows update current)
Linksys Router (dont know the model number off the top of my head)

so is this jason? brian? lol

for the port fowarding, do i have to foward them through the linksys router/do i have to disable the built in xp firewall?

should i stick with the original BitTorrent or should i look into a different clientside app?
