Operating Systems for a New RIg

We'll for my new system that will be built soon i want to have a good operating system, i can get Win Xp PRO, but i was wondering if there is a good free Operating System. I know about linux but i'll be using this system for gaming. Is linux good as a desktop OS, like how window works, and also is Linux better than windows if it is or isnt can u tell me why it is or why it isnt?

Thanks-njolakoski

Well, if you are into gaming Linux is not the best choice.
Its a great operating system though, but complicated.
Even the newbie friendly versions are a bit tricky.
Specially for people that have difficulties with Windows.
Linux is a descent desktop OS, but unfortunately not for gaming.
I think Windows XP Professional would be the better choice for you.
Don't get me wrong, I like Linux. But I do think Windows is more for you.

You can always dual boot if you want. Always remember that a computer is about SOFTWARE. What runs the software?

When all is said and done, there is ALWAYS some available software for Windows. A lot of it is even free!
