It seems to me like windows 2000 takes almost 4 times as long to startup than 98 did. This is one thing I really miss about 98, I hit the power button and bam, ready to go in about 15 secconds. I'm assuming this is normal. Win2000 started up just as slowly the first time I ran it. Other Windows 2000 and XP computers i see seem to start slowly too. What is the reason for this? Is there a way to speed things up so its more like my quick starting 98?

maybe the idea is that w2000 is stable enough to just leave booted all the time...
best thing to do..boot it while you are walking by to do something else...come back and its booted...thats what I do with w98

I think this is normal for win2k and xp to be slower, and something to do with access/security permissions. This is the same reason many people prefer 98 over win2k for gaming.
I'm sure tweaks are available(do google search), but you don't have the extra 45 secs? You can look at it this way, you don't need to reboot 2k nearly as much as 98, as it is a much more stable OS. FWIW...

No, it isn't really a problem, I guess I'm just spoiled by super fast startups. I kinda figured it was normal that 2000 takes longer. And I do have to reboot just as much, cause my dad is really cranky about leaving the computer on. If it wont be used in the next few hours. |

if you want the win2k to start up FASTER, all you need to do is disable all the services that you don't need such as Mail server, Web Services.... it would speed up the booting. But also remember what Microsoft said when XP came out... "FASTER BOOT UP" so i guess 2k was never meant to be fast. dude update to XP... it's just faster on everything |

My Xp Home boots a whole lot faster than 2K. 98SE takes 2 1/2 haircuts to boot.
Xp 17-21 seconds. |
