While troubleshooting my shutdown problem, I used the "Step-by-Step confirmation" choice in the Boot menu. When I get to the part about "Load All Windows drivers (Y/N)?" and say No, it boots via Safe Mode and the PC will shutdown properly. If I choose Yes but say No for each driver choice (there are 11 drivers), the PC will NOT shut down properly? What is the difference? As long as I answer the question "Load All Windows drivers (Y/N)?" with a Yes, no matter what I do after that point, the PC will not shutdown properly.
Any ideas? This isnt critical, but it is annoying. Thanks for the help! |

The shutdown problem is well known in Win98 SE and MS released a patch for it that was about as useful as a bump on a log.
That was one of the reasons I've always stayed FAR from SE ... IMO |

Try disabling APM in the bios.
What's your hardware? Have you installed all the updates from the Windows Update website, especially the hard drive cache?
I've been running Win98se with every update known to God and Bill Gates and for a Windows product, it's pretty stable to me.

I had a problem like this with a friends system. After a lengthy amount of troubleshooting I found out that It was the aureal vortex onboard sound. Threw in a spare and no more shut down probs. |

The Win98se shutdown supplement [HERE] is where I would probably start. I usually install it just for grins every time I install Win98se on a machine. Also take a look at the WINDOWS SHUTDOWN & RESTART CENTER.

Thanks. I know there are a myriad possible reasons why win98se wont shutdown properly. I have a 15 step list of things to try(same as your link Xeroid).... I was hoping that there might be something diagnostic about the windows drivers question I mentioned. I'm pretty sure I have installed the shutdown patch as well.
The mobo is aopen ax6bc
Diamond Stealth III s540
Creative SB Live Value
Maxtor 40G HD
linksys or Dlink NIC
256mB PC100 ram
TDK burner
I see about some of the patches you mentioned. Thanks for the ideas....

win98se gets sensitive for RAM and BIOS ...
Check if you have a bad RAM or try one stick if you have two .. also, if you flashed your BIOS lately, you can go back to the older BIOS... or if there are newer release for your BIOS then grab it and flash your chip as another option ...
The above helped me go over this hanging up and freezing on the shut down screen while i used to use win98se...

all i know is that 98se is nowhere near as stable as 98 first edition. but disable apm and make sure you're runnig all the updates and you should be fine.
eithre that or you have a bad driver. install any new hardware lately? |

oh yeah, another one I heard...
Disable fast shutdown as well
It tries to shut down too fast sometimes and a process will hang..
Agreed storm, I prefer Win98 just because its more versatile than any other MS OS (including gaming and hardware support)
really it doesn't crash all that often on me anyways. |

When I was on the Windows Update site, there was a new driver for my Creative sound card - I installed it and voila, the PC shutdown properly. I guess that was the problem. On the other hand, it now hangs at shutdown when it is sharing its printer and a couple of folders over the lan. Will it never end? Thanks for the help guys!
By the way, given a clean install, I have always preferred Win98SE over Win98, IMHO. Weren't there some patches in Se that fixed issues in Win98? |
