| Upgrading ME from 98SE on a new HDD
Hi all,
Got this error message trying to install upgrade version of ME on a fresh HDD:
-------------------------------------
The required Windows 98 files could not be found on the specified directory.
If you have not previously done so, you must install a complete version of Win98 before proceeding.
If you are a licensed user of Win98, do not exit setup. Try a different directory...
--------------------------------------
When I put in the licensed copy of 98, I get the same message. Which directory do I direct it to, to get the proper setup files. Please don't tell me I have to do a fresh install of 98 first...F#@K!
I'm going to bed.

If it's not recognizing the win 98 cd it sounds like you're going to have to install 98 first, though it may still not work (being ME and all). From what I've seen and heard it's not a very good idea to do such an upgrade (98->ME). You'll probably be getting quite a few people coming in just to say that. |

Yeah, I wouldn't usually try it (98->ME), but I've been trying to set-up this OLD cyrix II 300 PC, and I'm having a very difficult time getting the appropriate drivers (it might help if the mobo had ANY markings that might assist in finding its Make/Model number). I've had 98se on it (yesterday), but kept getting weird errors after loading what I thought were the right drivers, and never got the OB video to work beyond 16 colors). Today, I installed win2K, but the limited ram(64) made it come to a crawl, and video would only use 256 colors. So, I figured I'd try the ME upgrade disk he gave me. It's a long story, but I'm helping out an unemployed neighbor who has NO cash to spend, and the limit of my charity is for my time, not $$$. |

I don't mind helping a friend in need (especially a needy friend), but at some point they need to help me to help them. Eat some Ramen noodles or do without beer for a week and get me the few inexpensive things I need...help ME to help YOU!
If they'd have spent $20 on their Tecra ( http://www.techimo.com/forum/t115458.html and http://www.techimo.com/forum/t115116.html ), I wouldn't even be screwing around with this Cyrix POS (say it with me-SERIAL MOUSE). I have OVER 30 hours in on these machines, so pardon me if I sound a little jaded. |

Yea sounds very frustrating, I'm assuming the RAM for that thing you can find on eBay for like 10$ and it would make 2k plausible, but if that really isn't a solution might wanna just do a fresh of 98se again o_0 |

Gonna do the best I can with what I've got, and when he's not happy with the results, he's just gonna have to do the Ramen thing. As it is, though, I'm going to need to donate a $25 video card (which I'd much rather keep for a backup) I have lying around to get more than 16 colors working, but knowing what I do now, I'd have paid $50 to never have seen either of these machines! Seriously. No good deed goes unpuinished. |

Beetle Juice will hopefully visit your house some day, thus fullfilling your lifetime goal of meeting and dining with him. You WILL be rewarded some day. |

Yeah, that an when I was caddying for the Dalai Lama, in Tibet. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consiousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice. |
