blue death, repair win2k problem

Hey all, helping a friend with their older puter, everytime Win2K boots in mid boot the blue screen of death pops up. error loading tcpip.sys

I can boot to safemode w/out networking and the above file is where it should be. Haven't been able to find a replacement in case it's corrupted. So I'm trying to do a repair or upgrade with the 2K cd to fix the issue but that won't work as it says there's an installation in progress and i must reboot. Grrrrrrr! so then i make win2k boot disks to get the cd going and do a repair but i get another error message as boot1 loads saying there's an I/O error. So now I'm fed up and can't figure out how to fix this thing.... O yeah, not doing a reformat unless absolutely necessary as there's some important infor on the drive and I've little experience with backups.

So does anyone have any solutions? would replacing that one file do the trick if i can find it?? Any help is appreciated.. Don't know all the specs but safe mode says it's running SP4
athlon ~1.4
128ram
biostar board.

thanks in advance

I would think replacing the file should do the trick. Must have been corrupted somehow. As far as location goes, here's what I found on my machine running Win2k Pro with most recent updates.

tcpip.sys locations:
C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386
C:\WINNT\system32\drivers

If you can find the files on the CD then just copy and paste em while in safe mode. That should work.

I've gotten I/O errors before when I've made bootdisks for Win2k. I usually had to remake the disk and then it worked fine. I generally chalk it up to using crappy disks but ya never know, could be my crappy A drive
