| XP SP2 freezes on reboot
I installed SP2, and when the pc reboots, it freezes during the boot screen. Have done it about 4 times...install XP (with SP1). get it all running nice. Install SP2, and when it reboots...freeze city.
Any suggestions? |

...don't...use...SP2? lol but seriously, I'd hold off getting SP2 until it's older news. But that's just me. |

I've added the reg entry to ignore SP2 iwith Windows updates, but that's apparently only good for 120 days (this machine is for somebody else). Hopefully there's a solution in that time.
I can't be the only person with the problem |

I haven't had any problems with SP2. I was installing it to my sister's computer yesterday. It was a task. But the computer was running wiggy from the gate.

Doing a bit of reading around the web, it's starting to look like an issue with the chipset used on many of the ASUS (and others) motherboards. |

I'd reboot the PC with the line by line confirmation so that you know WHICH module is causing the problems. SP2 is not one program, but a whole bunch of them. It is most likely the Firewall as that is what has caused so many problems in other programs. But by doing a line by line confirmation, you may be able to discover which program is having the most difficulty and disable it temporarily in Safe Mode while you work on it.
You may want to check out the Compatiblity List on MS's site. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842242

Problem is, I can't even get into safe mode.
I received a response from ASUS (Motherboard manufacturer) this morning which said:
I think this problem may be cause by SP2 of windows but I suggest you change a memory stick to test again.
If no change please don't update SP2 now and waiting the next SP2 revision. |

Bein the first to try a newly released product is like asking to be the guinea pig! Hold off for a few months until the revisions are released that fix alot of the first releases problems.
And yes sometimes after an update the load time will be a little longer but 30 mins? Somethigns not right there! Either you have BELOW minimum specs for XP or something went wrong with the install.
