Here's something that should read it, this is a free dl:

This is from a scanner software called PaperPort, I couldn't link directly to the download, the site wouldn't let me. Go down about five headers, you'll see something about a download for .MAX file for Windows or Macintosh, pick yours and then get it.

I believe that .max files are also from a program called 3d studio MAX. Its a 3d moddeling and animation program.
