| Trouble upgrading to XP Home
OK, before anyone throws the first stone.......
I am working on a machine on the side for someone who had trouble with upgrading to XP Home from Windows 98SE. He called me in after he went through the upgrade once successfully and then was told to uninstall the upgrade to unistall some software.
So he uninstalled the upgrade, tried to uninstall his Nikon Software, which failed, then tried to reinstall the upgrade. It came up with one blocking issue and a few warnings.
The blocking issue is on Windows Shared Fax Client, it is saying that it must be uninstalled first before XP can be installed. I have looked everywhere for any Fax Client and found nothing, he has Office 97 installed and was wondering if it may be in there but I needed the CD to uninstall/change which he never had.
I did a search on google and found some article which said to find a file and delete it, I since can't find the article now..... :P
But does anyone know what to do??????????? |

OK found the article........... http://www.mcse.ms/archive58-2004-3-512811.html
And I removed the fxsclnt.exe file, and still no luck, same blocking issue detected on Windows Shared Fax Client..........
Now this issue only started after the second time he tried to reinstall, the first time this never occured....

ewww... that's a nasty upgrade, windows xp worked poor at best if it worked at all. imho, you should backup the data and go with a clean install of XP. |

my guess is that there is a remnant in the registry that the program is picking up. i would go thru it with a fine tooth comb.
the best way to track this down is to go to the sysinternals site and d/l two free utlities: one is a file monitoring program and the other is a registry monitoring prg.
with these two tools, you can isolate what the system is reading when your get the error. |
