Is there any way to recover the product key for an old Windows 98 CD that I misplaced? I don't have any thing left but the CD? |

Well if theres a serial number on the CD, you may be able to get one from them. Might have to pay or something, i dunno, its pretty old, so maybe not. Other than that, im assuming you have formatted, because you need the key, so other than that, I dont think there is any legal way to do it, no. |

Is it installed somewhere, or is it just the CD?

from the CD? Nope, since all CD's are just the same copy of the original, just the keys are different but fit a specific algorithm. |

stewart, you can quite easily recover the cd key from your registry, if you have a working installation of 98 on your pc. the cd itself does not have a cd key stored on it. it will just run any key you try to install with through a key testing program to work out if it is a valid key. |

Might as well start that search with "illegal cd keys". |

True... but as long as his 98 CD was legitimately purchased and he lost his original product key it is a stretch that this is technically unethical... |

You can also call Microshaft and explain (contritely) you lost your key, and could Mommy or Daddy cut you a new one.
They will.
