Trojan Attacks and More great Microsoft apps.

I seem to have a Trojan on my computer... Norton has quarantined it, yet everything seems to have gone to the crapper.. Along with MSN Premium seems to have garbaged all of my connections and internet service..

I have a brand new 80G hard drive.. Can I tear out my 40 gig which is currently my entire computer and install my XP Home on that drive making essentially my new computer until I can pick apart my other drive salvaging what I want..

So the end result is two drives containg each an operating system and each will run if I have that HD as the sole drive in the machine..

    Any and all suggestions appreciated..

yup...easy to do....i'm assuming you want both drives in the computer. Here's a step by step
    1) Take out the old hard drive.
    2) Look at the back of the old hard drive. Is it set for master or for cable select. Set the new drive as whatever the old one said and plug it into the same ide cable. Start your computer and install xp. Get everything running nicely and get a better av, like avg antivirus at www.grisoft.com . the free one will work fine .
3)Once you have your computer all protected, shut it down and get the other hard drive.
    4) If the old drive was on cable select, leave it there. If it was on master, change it to slave. Reconnect it on the same cable as the other hard drive but on the second connector. go ahead and start your computer, and then copy over all the files you need . avg anti-virus shoudl protect you from any crap on your other harddrive. btw..I'd suggest trashing norton anti-virus. check out http://free.hostdepartment.com/s/sr71000 . It's crappy right now but I'm working on it. I'm waiting to set up my web server before I get it looking nice. Until then, it has an ok list of programs to protect your computer....once I'm all set up..I plan on adding a lot more to that list .

Why do people bash Norton? It has seemed adequate up until now.. Is there any risk to my files on the other drive? How user friendly will the drive be when it was set up to be the master operating drive, and is now the slave.. Will it be a mess of file folders that will be hard to navigate?

uhh..it will all look exactly the same...norton is a resource hog as well as expensive.....avg anti-virus is free, I have a lot of friends that switched from norton to avg and is finds on average 5 to 10 trojans that were on the persons computer but norton never found, has free updates, the updates come more frequently, and all in all, runs faster and slows down your other programs less than norton does. can't go wrong...lol. you know how you go to my computer, and click c: and you see all your folder...shoudl see a windows folder, a program files folder, a documents and settings folder, and probably some more....it will all look exactly the same no different It's nice and easy to get around!

Yes I agree with hathor, don't go down the road of reinstalling until you've tried all the alternatives, it is just a very nasty last resort!

Try http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/trojanscan.asp as well if you've not done so already. Also both Ewido and TDS3 are available as time limited downloads, both good anti-trojan prog's.

Also run Hijack This and check its output log at http://hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english

    Good luck...
    No sleep 'til bedtime...
