Also, it seems that the about :config method does not work in Firefox version 9.1. I found that the middle-click option works in Mozilla, but by default, it is turned off. To turn it on, you have to set the value of browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclick in about :config to "true".
I tried setting the browser.tabs.opentabfor.windowopen to true, but it still doesn't work in Mozilla

well mozilla and the older versions of firefox might have a different value that controls this behavior. I am just going off of v1.0, and several things have changed. If you just do a filter search for tab and read through what the different settings are you could probably figure it out. I can't tell you exactly what to look for since i don't have either mozilla or a pre 1.0 firefox installation, but it should be relatively obvious what they do since they seem to name their variables pretty well.
BTW...to get the settings like i like them i had to change 5 or 6 variables, so there isn't just one single thing, it'll take some hunting and guesswork on your part. |

I found it, theres an entry in about :config to enable more tab options. Then in the options udner tabbed browsing, there is a choice to force all new windows to open in a new tab. Works fine.

Change it to "True" and then go to Tools>Options>Advanced and look for the new tabbed browsing options
