| Winxp glitch?, or website?
Hey guys.. I have a request for a good friend who has a new HP Pavillion Notebook running XP with SP2 already installed.
I (personally) cannot assist because Windows XP scares me, and I don't want any part of it...LOL. I know some of you have managed to work out the glitches..maybe you can point us towards a 'cure' for this one.
Here is her problem as stated in an e-mail (copy to me) that was sent to the Kim Komando's Show for analysis and possible help.
************************************************** **********
I forgot to add that she also has Ad-Aware SE installed (I am not familiar with the SE version) but she does not think the application/utility had a pop up blocker included. Other than Ad-Aware..she has no other pop up add removers. Quote: SYSTEM: Windows XP-Home w/ SP2 preinstalled on a new HP Pavillion Notebook.
I have Ad-Aware SE installed but no Fire Wall (yet!) other than whatever is
with SP2. Not hooked up to any network. Dial up connection
PROBLEM: Web browser window spontaneously disappears when I reach a certain
navigation point on the RootsWeb genealogy website. This problem seems
specific to this site.
a) Enter Rootsweb.com homepage.
b) Click "Mailing Lists"
c) Click "Surnames-C"
d) Click "Carter"
e) With Radio button on 2005, Type in "Alabama" query.
f) There will be one resulting archived message indicated. Click on
[FULL] to view this message.
g) The message displays for one second, then the browser window
spontaneously disappears and closes completely. Other open windows and
running programs are fine.
NOTE: I try this with other RootsWeb mailing list archives, with the same
results at the same point.
RECOMMENDATIONS I'VE TRIED:
a) HP Tech support thought it had something to do with the browser
settings in "Internet Options" I know how to find these settings, but have
no idea which setting would be causing the problem.
b) My ISP Tech Support thought the problem was with Pop-up blocking.
When I tried to specifically allow pop-ups from RootsWeb, I was asked "Are
You Sure.?" in a separate little window. When I clicked "Yes" the little
window, AND the RootsWeb browser window disappeared. So I disabled the
pop-up blocker completely. The same thing continues to happen.
c) I contacted the Help Desk at Rootsweb. They replied: ".Both blockers
and service pak2 are known to cause problems. Try turning the blocker
completely off. [I did] Sometimes that can prevent a page from loading. As
for the other, I have no suggestions. Sorry. It may have built in blockers.
Not sure if you need to check the windows help screen or if it installed any
into your browser to look at help there."
d) I tried Windows Help. I could not find any topic specific to my
problem.
e) I tried Microsoft Troubleshooting. apparently SP2 is not without its
share of problems! I found a page "Windows XP Service Pak 2 Support Tools"
but I have no idea which tool I might need to solve my problem.
f) Last - but certainly not least! -- I tried "Search Kim's Web Site"
using various key words. I could not find my specific problem.
HELP QUESTION: What could be causing this and what can I do to fix the
problem?
Thank you so much, Kim, for your time and expertise! Best regards, Xxxxx |

Given this seems to happen only at one specific website, my guess it is poor coding at website. Can you provide the url that will take us to the specific problem page? I'll take a look with both IE and Firefox (I'm running XP Pro, SP2).

I have been to the site without any problems...I am running Win98se. Following is an earlier e-mail with the various URLs to go thru the process of getting to the page she needs:
************************************************** ********* Quote: I've been having unexplained difficulty with RootsWeb and wondered if you have the same problem... here's what happens:
I go to the main page http://www.rootsweb.com/
... then click on "Mailing Lists" and get here http://lists.rootsweb.com/
... then Surnames "C" and get to here http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/c/
... then Carter and get here http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/c/carter.html
...then "search CARTER archives which brings me to here http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/?list=CARTER
(so far so good)
Now on the search page, I have a pop-up ad block. Could this be what's causing the difficulty that happens next? I type in "Wesley" in the Query field for year 2005. It then shows me the message result fine http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/isearch2 and it is for a William D. Carter, but when I click [full] to open and read the message, the entire Explorer window closes. It shows it for a nano-second before just shutting down. My computer stays on... just the Explorer Window I was using. Now I'm figuring this must have something to do with the pop-up ad blocking, and I thing there may be an option where I can always allow the from this site. BUT I wanted to first check and see if you've ever had that happen either with RootsWeb or any other site. In the event that allowing pop-ups isn't the problem over here, could you please (if you have a spare moment or two this weekend) copy whatever the message is and forward it to me? Murphy's Law being what it is, there may be some good info there... or maybe you have to be a List Subscriber to search? I never have had trouble searching before, though... | |

What happens if she just pastes this url into her browser:
| I don't know.. I have asked her to check this thread and email me with questions etc. for anything that come us here.. if I do not hear back from her soon, I will write her to try the copy/paste...which I doubt will have much, if any positive fixes.. She says she can get to the page for a microsecond and then it closes the browser.
Keep checking back..and I will add what she has done or tried differently.
I can get to all of the pages myself using Win98SE and IE 6.0...so, I suspect you are using Winxp... and that should indicate it is not a HUGE problem with XP.
Its almost gotta be something to do with a pop up blocker. I know that I cannot get to Hotmail thru at least one of my bookmarked URLs when I leave my pop up blocker running..it will close IE in a skinny minute.
BTW, that URL you left is not complete..so, she could not use that to paste.
