| system hangs when desktop appears???
This kind of irritates me, but when the desktop appears(XP pro OS) I cannot open or close any programs for about the first 60 seconds. Example: I click the Outlook quick launch button and I get nothing. When it finally opens up, everything is fine for the rest of the day, and running super fast.
This only seems to happen when the PC has sat shut down all night long and has a cold boot in the morning.
Also, my hard drive is getting very noisy( suspicious) for the first 5 minutes, then it too gets quiet again.
Any help would be great.
Athlon T-bird 872mhz
512mb RAM pc133
7200 rpm 20g WD 200BB
Ati Radeon 32mb ddr (updated drivers)
Epox 8-KTA-3
I am getting no errors whatsoever, the system is running awesome otherwise. |

Hah, awesome Icon, GZ!
mtrsprt - Do you have a lot of apps loading with Windows? Comet Cursor, Webshots, Office Tools, Adobe Gamma Loader, etc?? It sounds like there's something big still loading up in the background after the OS hits the desktop. I wouldn't blame the hard drive just yet. XP is designed to boot fast. That doesn't necessarily mean the apps you load with it are going to be done just as quickly. :P

yeah check for comet cursor and that gator prog that advertises. GET RID OF IT! (if you do have it) its spyware. most people surf the web and have this pop up come and just press okay not reading what it is.
also scanner, cd-recording software, video card programs, sound card progs, anti virus, aim, icq, msn any kind of messangers starting up can cause slow downs.
whens the last time you defrag too?

About the noise, are you sure it's the hard drive? My office PC is a Dell Optiplex that makes a lot of noise on a cold boot but I took the cover off and it was definitely a fan, not the hard drive. I'd be worried about any noise that's actually coming from the hard drive.

heres some info.
Only thing running in the background is my Ati icon in my task bar on the right.
Fairly new install, no gator crap no comet or anything like that.
Even if I did have one or two things loading up in the background, I dont think it would take 1 minute to load up, or even then, I would think I could still open up a program while that other one was loading considering the memory I have and the AMD processor running above 800mhz speeds.
Again, only happens when it has sat turned off for 8-10 hours or so. |

Oh oh ohoh
Before everyone else says it. Dont use Outlook!
hehe sorry couldnt resist, everytime ive had a problem with outlook I get at least 4 or 5 responses saying dont use outlook. (which I dont, I only have trouble with it with my users at work)
Seriously though, if outlook is hanging, maybe its just because its outlook, not that anything is wrong. Try using Eudora and see if that works.
