    Services.msc is broken???

Strange...when I try to run services.msc in WinXP Pro start-run like I normally would, I get this ActiveX message:

If I click 'no', it opens but with ZERO information.

If I click 'yes, I get this every time:

Whether I click OK or Cancel, it terminates.

Google isn't helping much, all I learned is that mmc.exe is the Windows component Microsoft Management Console...which works fine when I double click it in the System32 folder. Even when I try to launch Services from there I get the same messages.

Everything else "seems" to be working fine.

I've installed Avast Antivirus lately, that's all...Google isn't helping me much right now either, although I do see a guy with the same problem that also has Avast installed.

I haven't tried uninstalling it yet...I wanted to save that option for last. I even enabled every ActiveX option in IE.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!
    Mike

    UPDATE:

Sad to say, something is definitely wrong here. Trying to launch gpedit.msc results in the same errors. Same with IE (not that I want to browse with it, but the ActiveX controls are there)

WTH happened to my ActiveX controls?

I suppose avast has activex blocking controls, which perhaps are now blocking everything.

Just uninstalled Avast, rebooted...services.msc and gpedit.msc both launch with no errors, but there's no information showing at all...only the shell to the program is there, no actual data.

    Checking your links now, thanks.

EDIT: Ahhh, both .msc's are working now, they were launching in 'extended' view (little tab at bottom), once I click on standard everything shows up. Now do I attempt the Avast install again or go with AVG on my system? I just put AVG on my wife's, I wanted to run Avast just so we could compare the two for a while.

Found out how to get it back to standard view by default.

Just reinstalled Avast...my .msc's are working fine, but Avast itself has that error now and the repair option that helped the guy in your link isn't helping me at all.

Heh, I supose you should go with avg then if avast is causing that many problems.
I testinstalled it on my laptop with wxpsp2 and it worked good, couldn't get activex blocked even when I set it to block everything script related and others to high.

    Just repaired/rebooted again.

Now the .msc's are still working fine, as well as IE...but I'm getting the error every time I launch Avast. If click 'no' to decline terminating, Avast stays up and seems to be fine. I'm not sure if it really is fine or not though.
