| Upgrade from WinXP Home to WinXP Pro
I have heard many storys that Pro is much better then Home.. SO, I am planing on upgrading from Home to Pro.
My question is, do I have to do a complete format and reinstall using pro? or is there an option to over write system files and keep settings, installed programs and games? (I believe if you upgrade from Win98 to XP you're given an option like that) |

Depending on the situation, I usually tell people that with less than 5 PCs, XP Home works in most scenarios. More than 5 and you should really consider getting Pro and maybe having a file server. Again, depending on the situation.

Great, I like that comparison chart. I do like some of the options pro has. All the more reason for me to go pro.
Now that thats settled, that just leaves the answer to my original question. ;D |

are you running service pack 1 or 2? If so those could be potiential problems as it might see it as you trying to go backwards. |

or use can use the files and settings transfer wizard under system tools in the start menu |

Ok so I slipstreamed SP2 into XP Pro.. it DID finally give me an upgrade option, so I went and gave it a try.
It royally screwed up my computer.
followed the directions to the T... and after it "looked" to be done and it went for the final reboot, during the Windows XP screen, I seen..... the dreaded.... blue screen of death!
After which it would restart on its own and BSOD at the same spot in a continuous loop.
SO, I lost my files.. I got most them saved from backups. but some of the resent stuff went byebye. (my bad for not backing them up sooner heh)
I have a feeling that it was my norton that jacked me. No clue what else it could have been. |

Sorry about the double post, vknid if you haven't already reformatted, can you provide the error code for the blue screen of death? |
