Very laggy computer
hey i got a computer: xp, 512 mb ram, 70Gb harddrive and pentium 4 2.6 Ghz processor and somehow im using up to 72% of my cpu even though im not even running any programs except messenger, anti virus and firewall
i just recently ran an antivirus cuz its slow and deleted all the adwares detected and there was no other spyware blah blah but its still slow and i deleted some unwanted programs but its still slow
before when i do exactly the same thing it only uses 1-5% of the cpu and when i check the process and system idle process is taking up so much room and my comp is so laggy now use to be fast
what do i do to make it faster like before?

First off, what process thread is taking up all your CPU?

when was the last time you defragmented the pc...
did the antivirus delete all the spyware ?
you might try running
Ad-Aware
Spybot Search and Destroy
then doing a Defrag on your drive...

System Idle process thread is the free CPU %.
System thread on my Dev box is only peaking at 1% VERY occasionally. Total cpu time today (8+ hours) is only 47 seconds.

I second the idea of defragging... and if it still runs slow, what anti virus program are you using?
Main PC: AMD FX-8350 / 16gb DDR3 1600 / AMD 7970GE 1200mhz Core & 1600mhz Mem / Win7 Pro 64bit
File Server: AMD Opteron 180 / 3gb DDR400 / Nvidia 6200 / WinXP Home 32bit / Lubuntu 12.10
Laptop: HP-Compaq nc8430/ Intel CoreDuo T2400 / 2gb DDR2 667/ Ati x1600 / WinXP Pro 32bit

It might also be bad drivers. Like if you have bad/corrupted USB drivers and have a USB mouse or keyboard this could be the problem. But yeah, the defrag is the best option at this point.
