| How Can I Find My Product Key?
Hi there - me again.
I have a quick question. I need to reformat a computer today with Win 98 (I know, how old, but their system will not hold anymore).
I have the CD for Windows 98, but they cannot find the envelope it came in, and they have Win ME on their machine now, and it is SOOO SLOW, so they want to go back to 98, but I am afraid to start without the key.
Any way I can find the key for it without starting and getting stuck??? Please let me know. |

you can look in the registry..but if it has winME on it now I am pretty sure it will have the WinME product key
run "regedit"
then look under
hkey local machine/software/microsoft/windows then click on "current version" so that it opens up in the right window pane....then if you scroll down some on the right you will see the "product key"...but as I say it is probably the ME key

IMO, If you have Win98 second edition that is ok, if you have Win98 original I would re-install the ME. It might help to disable the system restore in ME if you don't need it. If the current ME is SOOO SLOW maybe it is because it is SOOO MESSED UP. Try a re-install. I've put ME on lots of 233 to 350mhz machines without problems. Does it have enough memory?

Did you take any time to see why it is so slow now? Maybe its as easy as removing an application. Maybe the hard drive is almost full. Maybe they need more memory. Maybe they have a virus that can be removed, etc. |
