Ever seen this problem in Netscape 4.7?

Netscape seems to freeze momentarily, seemingly at random. It'll happen as often as several times a minute, or as little as every few minutes. This is becoming really annoying. Any thoughts?

I'm running Win2KPro on a PIII@933 with 256MB RAM connected to a mixed (MS, NW, Unix) network with a T-1 Internet connection. I have checked a few things for possible problems and found none.

    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

    What ver.? 4.7?
Are you using a proxy server?I'm guessing you are, what with the t-1.
Does freezing=stalled or no kboard or mouse functions?
    Have you tried another browser.
What were the things you checked for possible problems?

Is it some websites or all?

    Is it Netscape only?

I have fixed some problems by deleting all the user files (saving the bookmarks), but I don't think this will solve your problem.

    Try IE
Try flushing the cache and maybe even the cookies.

It's only NS, and the only site it seems to occur more frequently with, is TechIMO (banner ads, maybe?). But, it also seems to have started recently. I'll try flushing the cache and history.

I'll have to watch a little closer to see if it happens on the local network sites. As for what I've checked; unneccessary services running, adjusted several of the NS cache settings, looking for anything that jumps out and says phone home every few minutes.

I used to have similar problems when I ran McAfee AV. It had to do with having it set to check every file every time it did anything. Just an idea.

I had a web site that would lock up my compter hard. It would happen randomly. I was using IE5.5 at the time. It was only one site and on any page. I always made sure I had a bare minium of other programs running incase of a freeze.

After a while they must have fixed the site. I tried to find a way to email the webmaster, but they had no links to him.

I did not think about disabling my NAV. Perhaps there was a problem with that.

I think I figured out what's happening. I have my NS profile set to a network directory so I can access it from both of my my machines. I think, whenever NS has to access the cache, the network is causing a slowdown. (welll, duh!) I think it happens more with TechIMO, simply because I usually have multile windows open to here, and anytime one of them refreshes, gets a new ad, or goes to another page, it's hanging the entire app while it has to access the network for the cache. I don't think I can work around this and still have a network based NS profile, just thought I'd give my conclusions thus far.

    Any other ideas?

    Tim

BTW, I think I probably should have listed this in the Network and Internet forum. oops!
