Linux and XP
Ok i had xp on my pc and then I put mandrake linux on it! After about 20minutes of playing with linux I got all that I wanted out of it! I didn't like it and wanted it off my pc!
Ok I formatted it off from windows but now when I boot up I get the lilo or whatever it is asking what hdd to boot to! How can I remove this now? I do not think I got it on my pc anymore so why is it still doing this?

in ms windows
you can use linux fdisk to remove the old partions to, i am not sure if ms windows fdisk can do this.Odds are very good there are several spelling mistakes in this post.

You should be able to fix the mbr from XP or from the XP CD rescue console -I believe it is the same as Win2k, if so the command you are looking for would be fixboot or fixmbr

After you do the "fdisk /mbr" with a 9X boot disk.
You will have to fix the master boot record with your XP install CD.
Put the CD in and act like you're going to do a normal install.
At some point it will ask if you want to go to the "Recovery Console", which you do.
At the "Recovery Console" you can type "Help" and it will list the commands. I can't remember exactly which one you want, I think it's "FIXMBR". You will recognize it once you see it.
It should then rewrite a new Master Boot Record and it will be like you never had Mandrake on there.
You can then "Exit" the "Recovery Console" and reboot your PC.
i am not sure if ms windows fdisk can do this.

boot from a dos or windows 98 boot disk, when you get the a:/ command prompt type a:\fdisk mbr. or if you go to your hard drive manufacturers web-site ie: IBM they will do a utility disk which will wipe or write zeros to your drive ie: clean it from any file system. this should get rid of the linux partions for good! i have run into problems with formatting linux partitions and i find that POWERQUEST PARTITION MAGIC is the BEST utility for these kind of operations.

right you are rick. although there is no need to use the XP cd for the master boot record. simply using "fdisk/ mbr" wiped lilo several times from my xp hard drive with no problems. guess it depends where you write it to also.

Hmm, that's odd. Everytime I've done "fdisk /mbr" I've had to rewrite the MBR.
I think I always installed LILO to the first sector of the drive it was on, and not necessarily the first drive.
