| Games run horrible in WineX
Ok I got Age of Empires installed using WineX and used a No-CD crack to get it to work without pestering me about the CD I had in the drive.
Problem is that it runs horrible, I can't play it everything is so choppy. Is this because of the system?
P2 300 MHz
64 Mb Ram
Geforce2 (with the drivers installed as of today)
WineX reccommended a 500 but I figured since these games used to run fine on this machine when it was a windows machine they might work.
Also would more Ram help?

Yeah, even the original Age of Empires wouldn't run too smoothly with those system specs. If it's AOE2 you're trying to run on that system, I say it's doomed before you even started. I'd suggest picking up a copy of WarCraft2 and trying that under WineX. IMO it's more fun than AOE, and it's definitely programmed better and will run smoothly with lower specs. |

The original AOE was the oldest gme I had laying around other than MechWarrior 2. Might have to give that a try
I'll probably go out and pick up WC2. Should be pretty cheap by now right? Especially with WC3 looming near?

Hi,
WineX can be a bit of a gamble but works great with some games
I have RTCW running great, the graphics are smooth & the sound is crystal clear. It also works in multi-player with no problems
Also the more RAM the better IMO. I have 3 128 meg sticks inmy home machine but would really like to go to 1 gig

one lesson i learnt from installing linux without windows, u can't play your games
right now i'm gonna back up my system files, make a small partition for windows and copy the files i need and games,
thats the only way to have fun with games without being annoyed

I recommend atleast a 1 GHz system with plenty of memory for WineX. Be amazed that a P2 300 loaded the game through the Wine binary translation engine, less long actually be able to load the MS DirectX conventions without crashing. Older pre-DX5 games would be best suited for testing your system with Linux.
Good Luck,
