| Lost 600 MB Space on C:/ Partition ....How to retain it
Hi,
I was copying a movie from one server on my Local PC in intranet Lan and than I dediced to cancel the copying. It was a 700 MB movie of which I had copied some 400 MB.
Now the problem is that my C:\ drive which was having 700 MB free (it's capacity is 7 GB) and now it is only having some 70-90 MB space...I know that this is due to the remains of the copied file. But I don't where are they ? IT might be possible that Windows is not able to show that file on Explorer.WHAT SHOULD I DO ? HOW CAN I RETRIEVE THAT LOST 500+ MB SPACE ?

Do you have Windoze set up to "show all files"? In start / settings / control panel / folder options / view / "show hidden files and folders" ?

look in the temp folder also....to see if the fragment is in there
also you can use the file search thing and search for files over 200mb or whatever
and/or search by date since it will be one of the most recent files

I think what is happening is that THERE IS DATA LOSS kind of thign happening here...
the system is not able to show/retrieve 500+ MB of C:\. Can some one tell me how to retrieve such kind of lost space ? any utility/software for this ?
Regards EDIT:: By the way John If I delete all the files in C:\Documents and Settings\<My Login>\Local Settings\Temp than IS IT SAFE to do it? My temp folder is occuping some 200 Mb so the file is not here but stil I would love to make my 70 MB space to 270+ MB

Deleting the temp files is safe and in fact is good practice to do routinely since it frees up space.
Have you run checkdisk to fix any lost/misallocated clusters/files? After a serious file error, fragments of files can take up hard drive space. Right click on your drive in windows explorer, go to Properties, then Tools, then Check Disk, then enable both options to automagically fix errors and attempt recovery of errors. If there are lots of errors it may take a few hours to fix so you may want to kick this off before you go to bed. |

To clean up some more temp files, remove all files in these locations:
C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Windows\Temp
Show all hidden files and delete the files inside these folders...(not the folders themselves).
You can also run cleanmgr from the run command
Definitely run chkdsk to see if it comes up with any errors that may say your hdd is corrupt or dying.

Also, check out CCleaner... It'll help clean up a lot of "garbage" files that are left behind by various things.
And an addition to salad's suggestion, also look here:
C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Conent.IE5
You can delete all folders in that location. Be sure to close Internet Explorer and AIM before doing so. And if you get an error saying the folder couldn't be deleted, you can try using UnLocker. You might be able to delete the "index.dat" file but I'm not sure of the side effects as I've never done it before; so unless someone else can comment on that, I'd suggest just leaving it.

Did you try running CCleaner (link above)? My guess is the partially transferred file is still in one of the various temp locations. CCleaner can usually fix these kinds of issues. That is, unless your file system has become corrupted; but that's a whole other issue (which I don't think you have). |
