Editing registry.

I recently asked the following question at the main Microsoft help site concerning the XP Pro SP2 registry

I am trying to edit the contents of
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Discardable\PostSetup\ShellNew
to remove a whole load of obscure file types I will never want to create when I right click in an explorer window.
This works, but a few seconds later they are all back!
XP seems to have rebuilt the entries.
Why is this, and how can I prevent it happening?

The reply I received was less than helpful, suggesting I went to my local (UK) MS support site as "There are significant programming differences between North America and localized versions of software." A statement of which I doubt the truth, particularly in the area of the registry.
The UK site seems to offer paid support only, unlike the US one.

Still, enough ranting - does anyone here know the answer to my question?

TweakUI (free) has an option to do this for you.
Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP

Thanks sr71000, I'll try that and post an answer here if Steve's solution does not pan out.

Steve, I've got tweakUI, the option you mean is "Templates" which is NOT under "Explorer" but on its own. A bit confusing, but I found it in the end after rummaging in Explorer for some minutes! It appears to work, I wonder if it was tweakUI that was rebuilding the list?

Thanks,

Peter.

I believe that X-Setup can also do that for you.

Crap Cleaner will remove invalid/unused filetype listing from the registry. The first time I ran it on my laptop it removed over 50 filetype listings, haven't seen them come back since
