    Question Defrag Running FOREVER

Hi. I'm running a defrag on an older computer, it has Windows 98SE but for what I use this pc for, the OS is fine. I have been running the defrag for over an hour, and it just starts over and over, hasn't gotten beyond 10% defraged. Since it's 98SE, I couldn't figure out how to see how badly the defrag was needed before I started it. I don't know when the last defrag was, this pc is a portable that I take when traveling and rarely use but when I need it, I need it. It seemed so much slower when I booted it up that I thot a defrag would help (after the disk scan & after the disk clean-up), but the way it's looking, this defrag is never going to finish! Any suggestions anyone? THANK YOU!

Are you disconnected from the internet and running in Safe Mode? First empty the Temporary Internet Files folder, then run ScanDisk, then Defrag.

the built-in defrag program in 98/Me is horrible. a great defrag utility is diskeeper: http://www.download.com/Diskeeper/30...ml?tag=lst-0-2 it comes with a free trial. it will defrag fast.

actually the defrag from ME is pretty fast...way faster than the one in 98se

    ----

one question.....have you turned off the screen saver?? if not that will continually restart the defragger....

also, as suggested, you can try it in safe mode

I agree totally with John Prophet. The ME version of defrag is MUCH better than 98's. In fact it has long been recommended to put the ME version on 98 systems. You can Google for the ME defrag and d/l it. Simple rename the 98 version of defrag to something like .old and copy the ME to the folder. From then on the ME version will run and it is significantly faster.
Better yet I believe there is free version of Diskeeper that is available.

Thanks everybody. I had turned off my screen saver, but never thought of running in Safe Mode - worked like a charm. APPRECIATE YOUR HELP!
