Win XP Fire Wall
Just installed win XP Sp Pac 2 and no Fire Wall.
Under the "general" tab (Windows Firewall in Control panel) it is grayed out and set to No and I cant change it.
Under "Exceptions" it says Windows Firewall is turned off. Your network administrator is using group policy to control these settings.
I just started using win XP and I don’t know to much.
Can anybody help.

You probably have to sign on as the administrator or give your user name admin privileges.

Is this your home PC or a work PC?
If it's your home PC your login is probably not administrator level. Also look under Services to see if "Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is enabled and started.
If it's a work PC then based on the error message the network admin is preventing people from running the XP firewall using something called Group Polices which allow an admin to push out default settings and policies to many computers at once.
It's a very handy feature that I would love to use at my work if the decision to upgrade off of NT is ever approved.

Thanks for the reply.
My computer is a home computer with “Win XP HOME” and Not connected to a network
When I first click on the Win firewall in control panel it says……
“Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the windows Firewall/internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?”
However under services.msc Win firewall is enabled and automatic and under msconfig it is checked.
So I hit Yes and it comes up but Win firewall in “control panel” is still grayed out and on OFF.
Thanks again for any help You can offer!
PS. I just checked help and it says Group Policy tool is not available on this version of windows so how can it be on.

Go back into services.msc and check to make sure the Application Layer Gateway
service is enabled.
