working on a gateway computer that is running windows xp home.
if booted with last known good config, or normal mode it goes to a grayish black screen after the windows logo
if booted into any safe mode, it hangs at agp440.sys
tried resetting bios settings to default. tried using a pci graphics card, tried recovery console (from xp pro cd) and it froze, tried updating the bios but it says to re-insert a floppy and try again (it says it probably wont work on a floppy formatted by xp... and that is all i have at my disposal at the moment). tried using an xp boot floppy, but it says it is missing hal.dll.

also, many people that have tried that say that it just freezes on the process before after you disable agp440

What led up to the problem? I made the mistake of assuming you had replaced somthing major like Mobo or Graphics Card. Is it onboard?

There are alot of things that can cause this. I had someone bring in a laptop with a San Disk Mem card stick in it that did the same thing. Pulling the card and reseting the laptop worked. If you cannot get into recovery console or safe mode you may have to reformat and reinstall. You will probably have to fdisk the HD before you reinstall. You used to be able to go into DOS and fix this stuff but RC is the only way I know of now.
If you need the info off the HD you can still access it from another computer.

yea, i was afraid of that. i am waiting to hear back from my friend about getting the gateway cd... maybe that can access the RC. if not, i need to get his permission to format and reinstall... saving "savable" info on dvds for him

As I said you will probably have to fdisk and reformat.
