    shell32.dll, inuse.exe

    Hi,
Why can't I replace my shell32.dll? Is there a way to replace it, I couldn't get the ntfsdos to work properly so I could've exchanged it in dos.
This is the result, the help, I get the same just by typing 'inuse'.

    >inuse shell32.dll c:\winnt\system32\shell32.dll
    InUse - version 1.31

    INUSE replacement destination [/y]

    replacement Specifies the updated file
destination Specifies the existing file to be replaced
/y Suppresses confirmation prompt to replace file

Source and destination must include the complete physical or UNC pathname

Well, there's your problem! You need to qualify the source filename, not just shell32.dll, it needs the full path.

Ooh... sorry. Hmm... not sure. So you can't boot into Safe Mode Command Prompt Only?

I think it is possible to turn off WFP, I can't quite remember how though. Have you tried renaming the current shell32.dll and then copying over the new one?

Yep, tried it in safe mode command prompt. I guess it still uses the file.

Would be great to turn it off, microsoft doesn't say anything about that

    Command prompt IS shell32.dll

Umm out of curiosity why are you trying to replace shell32?

Maybe use a batch script that runs in autoexec.nt (since win2k doesn't use autoexec.nt)

it needs to run early, so not sure how else to get it early....
batch script maybe too late too since it would require the shell to run.

Can you boot to a boot disk, with the ntfs drivers and try it?

You could always try slaving it in another machine and overwriting it that way. You'd need a spare computer though

As I mentioned earlier, the 'ntfsdos' (which allows read/write on a ntfs through dos) didn't work. It reported multierrors when even trying to list contents of any dir, even root.

The reason I'm trying to replace it is, that I've changed few avi's inside it (like the one that is displayed when copying/moving files).

W2k does have repair mode, but it doesn't really help me a lot.

Slaving it to another machine could do it Not very eager to take the machine into parts. It's a compaq, pizza - very small.

I'll try that as soon as I have time to shutdown this and open two cases
    Thanks for the suggestions.
