It's supposed to be designed for people that don't use IE to get their updates. I don't think it can be disabled, but . . . a little searching and you'll find it's already been hacked.

well here goes.
you can also easily turn it off by going to Tools -> Manage Add-Ons, and disabling the WPA add-on
I copy and pasted this statement right from Techimo home page. I also just assumed that to go this route you started in IE, but maby not. I also thought this was a hack or way around MS verification. All I know now is that I am confused. I am just trying to understand this process.
Also I am running IE and a legit paid for XP PRO.
Thanks for any and all help from everyone.

sctrt, I replied to your PM, sorry for taking so long Quote:
The WPA add on, is the piece of software which microsoft installs on your windows xp machine to help it check whether your CD key has been used on more than one machine. If it detects that you installed the same copy of Windows XP is installed on more than one computer, it will block you from the windows update web site, and prevent you from downloading any software from microsoft.com, like Microsoftw Anti-Spyware, etc. You can still get security updates using Automatic update, but no extra microsoft software.
To have the WPA add on show up in the list, you have to first visit the windows update web site, select which type of update you want "Express or custom" and then it will tell you that it needs to update a component of the windows update system. After it installs itself, you might have to reboot the PC, I don't remember. Anyways, you then have to go back to the windowsupdate web site, and THEN go to tools -> Manage Add Ons, and disable the WPA add on. From that point forward, whenever you visit the windows update web site, you will get a little pop up, that one of the add ons is disabled and is needed, but don't worry about it, windows update will work.

I'm sure microsoft will think up a way to force you to use it, like preventing you from accessing the windows update site if the add on is turned off, but for now, lets enjoy the finding . |
