Welcom to TIMO. Are you talking about just upgrading your comp from 98 to 98se? If you install over, you will lose some information from previous program installs. I think what you can do is boot windows, and stick in the 98se cd after windows loads. The auto loader will detect a newer version and ask if you want to upgrade. I could be wrong. I haven't used 98 for a long time now.

If you have the windows 98SE upgrade (was there an upgrade version of SE?) then you should be able to do it. I'm not too sure if the OEM or retail full version of 98SE will allow you to do this. I would just try it and see. |

just boot to windows 98....put the win98se disk in....it will ask you if you want to install it...click "yes"
if it doesnt ask you then just go to "my computer"....see the win98se cd in the d: drive....right click it and click "open"...then click "setup"

what I am trying to do is install a network adapter on an old computer with Windows 98 so my teenage son can get on line. The adapter will not install. The people at Linksys told me it was because I needed Windows 98 SE. I talked with someone else and they said I needed the full version. I don't know what I need. Any help is much appreciated. |

is it a retail computer, gateway, compaq,
does it have a restore disk with it,
if it does then it might have drivers on it for some stuff on the computer,
that your 98SE don't have,
so before you do anything'
write down hardware in the computer,
modem, network card, sound, video,
you may need to find the drivers for them,
I am not sure if you can get them off of the restore disk if you have one,
if you don't have anything on the computer you need I would do a fresh install
but you will loose any programs you got with the computer, if it still has the same copy of windows on it, they always gave you free software with new computer, like MS word,
MS money, |

| fdisk will not format the drive, it allows you to partition the drive. Changing the partitions will mean you lose all the data on the drive. format will format the drive, and will also mean you lose all the data on any partition you format. You should not use either of these dos utilities unless you have backed up any important files you need to save. A fresh install is usually better than an upgrade or reinstalling over the top of the current installation, unless you want to keep a lot of your current files and settings. |
