need some clarification with converting files...

Hi all,

I'm a bit confused on the process of converting file types...I downloaded a movie that was an Mpeg file type, I have a program that converts files. So I converted the movie to SVCD and also as a DVD, my question is why does the file still say it's an Mpeg even though I converted and created one version as SVCD and another as DVD, what are the differences between Mpeg, Mpeg1, Mpeg2, SVCD, VCD, and DVD, I wanted to convert the file so that it is the best quality when I play it in my DVD player or PC, hope some of you's can help, thanks.

a VCD and DVD arent file types... when u burn an Mpeg as a VCD (Video CD) or DVD it just enables it to be played on TV DVD players and such...

as for a difference in mpeg and mpeg2.... guess its just some encoding differences
