Cool

After a quick lession in the built in spyware that runs deep within ME and XP I paid more for an OEM copy of 98SE than a new copy of XP. Just go into C:\windows\PC Health and you will only begin to see why the government can find e mails sent 6 monts age to some 3ed word country.
Then there files generated with your e mails and even when I made an icon of my child to use on my desktop. This info is sent to who ever wonts it ( big brother) every time the little icon comes up saying check for a new upgrades to you OS.
Even turning on all the things built in the windows operating systems you still only see what they wont you to see.'
It was a copy of a program called compupic that opened my eyes. Nothing can hide fron it. I joke about the tricks used to gain info on us . The joke is I could never see it happening at the time. But just like the person who walks through snow it is the snow tracks that gives them away.
Give me your regestry and I own your secrets you keep on your computer. PC health ( wonderfull sounding name kinda like social security number and military inteligence) is just a smoke screen.
our government has been to bed with alot of bad people to gather knowlege and inteligence is power. I feel that is why Microsoft is allowed to stay a monopoly it funnels info to the government.
If I wont 48 X 48 icons and prety 24 bit video like in XP I will just change my regestry. Microsoft has not had a new idea in years. In my openion 98SE was and still the best of the windows line.
Please please stop bundling programs built inside your operating systen. I have not found a bundled program forced on my by microsift that comes close to one I can buy or sometimes get as freeware. There program to burn CD's can not hold a candle to Nero. there video player is old (even the bete 9.0) is nothing but a new skin placed on an old face.
I stick with windows due to the amount of software. The only secure computer with youu bank account, and childrens picturs is the computer that new has access to the web. It is bad enough with all the othere bad people trying to grt your info but to have help by microsoft building in the means tto gather you life is nothing more than the book "1984".

Wow, this thread has taken on a life of it's own! I responded back when it first started so I'll update what I'm using now.

I'm tripple booting Win98 / WinXP / Mandrake 9.0.

I still have Windows 98 because I'm too cheap to go out and buy a newer version of Easy CD Cremator. It just erks me that I can't get my older version to work with WinXP. I don't burn that many CD's so I have not felt the need to upgrade my HP CD burner yet. I also keep Win98 because that's what we still use at work on our laptops. The company just uses whatever came on the laptops and doesn't want to pay for lisences to modernize.

I have WinXP on another partition of my main drive. It's ok I guess. More stable than Win98 (I've never crashed it). I got it so I could learn more about WinXP. I run across customers who have upgraded to XP and have questions to ask me when I'm in on a service call. I use XP just enough to keep familiar with it.

I have Mandrake 9.0 on another hard drive. It amazes me how quick it is even though it's on a old WD 10gig 5400rpm hard drive. (XP and 98 are on my WD 7200rpm hard drive). I gotten pretty good with the GUI (X) but still need more time and practice with the console (command prompt). Learning more every day and having fun. This is the 4th install I've had and the 3rd version of Mandrake starting with 8.1.

Mandrake just gets slicker every time. It's just my opinion, but I think Linux will be ready very soon to start replaceing Windows on retail PC's for first time computer owners. If you've kept up with the news you know that Wal-Mart is offering several models of PC's with different versions of Linux installed. The install was very painless. The only thing I had to manually configure was my USR hardware modem.

So to sum it up, I'd have to say Mandrake 9.0 is my favorite.

Mike

Mandrake is growing on me, but I leked slackware. However, whiltI was happy setting everything up manually, I had some software compatibility problems and switched to Mandrake 9. Quite impressed with it, but as always I am tuning it up.
I also use FreeBSD, but that is o hold for the mo as I am downloading a newer version, and would be happier with that as I would probally need a reinstall.
I also have win98SE insatlled for te wine DLLs, but it doesn't get used. I also installed FreeDOS 8 in a 2gig partition, but I can run any DOS programs better in linux

Who dug up this fossil? Interesting though, as we are now in the Vista Age. Funny seeing users complain about XP and praise the virtues of 2000k and 98. Maybe some are now complaining about Vista. After browsing through some of these old posts, its the same thing. GOT TO HAVE THE HARDWARE TO RUN THE OS. My Pentium II ran great with 98! I love Vista on my Intel Quad with 4MB DDR2 6400 of memory. It would have sucked on my old P4 with 1MB of DDR 3200. I guess some people never do learn from history
