LINUX Installation
I have Windows XP Professional SP2 in C
I have Windows Vista in D
I have my documents in F
I want to install Ubuntu in E.
I already downloaded the files, but when I tried to boot it from the CD, it doesnt work, same with Bayanihan Linux, Free BSD.
Do I need to load a linux loader so I can install Linux?Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHZ Prescott w/ HT

did you set your pc to boot from CD first in BIOS?
did you burn the image properly? (not just put the file on a cd, but actually use the burn image feature)Athlon 64 x2 3800+/2gb/asrock 939dual-sata2/gf6200/audigy2 zs plat/sonata + Asus V6J + Lenovo Ideapad U330

first is the floppy, then the cd, then the harddisk. i even tried to prioritize booting from the cd.
well i burned the ubuntu installation twice. one using nero, just copied the contents and burned it in a cd.
the second is i also used nero, and chose the boot cd and copied the files.
both didnt workIntel Pentium 4 3.0GHZ Prescott w/ HT

you need to choose burn image
what do you mean by "the files"? it should be one big .iso fileAthlon 64 x2 3800+/2gb/asrock 939dual-sata2/gf6200/audigy2 zs plat/sonata + Asus V6J + Lenovo Ideapad U330

Sounds like booting to CD has been disabled in your BIOS. Should be in your motherboard manual how to set that (if you lost that, just get into BIOS setup and it's under boot order/priority). Your motherboard should support loading from CDs though. Of course, a Windows XP disc works fine when booting up with one, right?
Now, is it just completely skipping over the disc, or is it locking up, or is it repeating a bunch of letters/numbers/symbols? If one of that latter two, I'd suspect either you aren't burning the discs right, or you have a bad cd burner (more likely the former, make sure to read directions on burning linux CDs). If it's burned properly, try using CDs burned at a friend's house.

bios is fine, i was able to boot all of my windows installers.
what i mean "files" is, i extracted the iso file using iso buster and then i burned the extracted files into a cd.
what did i do wrong?Last edited by foxyreign; October 23rd, 2005 at 03:13 AM.

Oh yeah, don't extract the ISO image!
Instead, there should be an option in Nero to 'Burn ISO' (should be under the File menu). Do that instead. On the ISO are not only files but the bootloader, which isn't a file.

Provided you use Burnfree, and the CD doesn't explode/the laser doesn't fall off, yeah it should work.

Should be. Forget if it autoconfigures or not, but it shouldn't be a huge issue.
Oh, and you can replace the MBR with the Windows XP disc if you need to, so no worries there if that doesn't work out. Just boot up to recovery console, and put in (in this order):
FIXBOOT (maybe BOOTFIX)
FIXMBR

yes, ubuntu auto configs the booting for you... by default when i boot it has ubuntu, ubuntu with different options, memtest, and Windows loader. if i click on windows loaded i have win xp pro and win xp pro 64bit beta (old install that i never got rid of)

On the other hand - the article fails to mention if the school has a policy about wearing t-shirts with guns on it... Odds are it does... So just like Techimo..... his freedom of speech is...
Talking back to a LEO isn't smart.
