Hi,
My wife is using AOL 9.0 on her Toshibe M55S135 Laptop.
She was on the road last week and in reconfiguring the software to dial up from a new location she has somehow turned off the speakers on her laptop.
We have been down the whole road of Volume settings/ properties etc and all is set ok. I thought she must be off the rails till this morning I was laying in bed and thought about what had gone on to the machine recently. I came here to my office and tried turning the speakers off here with AOL 8.0 under modem properties and lo and behold the whole machine is silent.
I have tried to talk her through how to get to this sectrion of her software and just can't seem to get there.
I am on Nthn Germany and she is in Sthn France ( See my user name has two locations!) so if anyone could help me with this I would appreciate it.
I don't need to be flamed for using AOL I have explained in many previous threads why I use AOL which id basically local access in many parts of the world. I travel a lot.

No apologies needed. There are lots of AOL users here.
AOL 9.0 does not use its own dialer (unlike 8.0). It uses the Windows modem properties. I believe turning off the "modem speaker" disables all sound since laptop modems do not have their own speaker. So have her check the modem properties in control panel.
The other place to tweak this is in the AOL System Information utility. There's a modem tab in there where some settings can be adjusted. |

Hi,
Thanks for the info.
I talked her through the control panel Modem Properties etc and she found the slider for Volume was about 1/2 way along. She moved it al the way along and it made no difference.
Where can I find the folder you mention in your post above as quoted below? Quote: |

With AOL 9.0, you'll have to do it from AOL's software. From what I remember, load AOL and before you sign on, you'll have to go to "setup" (or something along the lines of that).
Then something like "hardware setup" or "configure hardware"
You'll sometime need to select your modem and hit configure, something like that. Ugh, I wish I can remember the exact details.
Then set the volume to where you want it. I'm sorry I don't have the exact directions as it's been about 3 years since I last used AOL. But I bet if you were to click the setup button before you logon, you can take it from there. Again, I'm sorry for the vague answer. |

Ah ha! I found them for ya. Quote:
You can adjust the screeching sound that your modem makes when it connects.
To change your modem sounds
1. On the Sign On screen, click Sign On Options.
2. In the AOL Setup window, click Expert Setup.
3. In the AOL Expert Setup window, highlight the location that uses dial-up modem and click Edit.
4. In the Edit Location window, click Edit Devices, and click Next.
5. In the Edit Devices window, select your modem and click Next.
6. In the Edit Device window, choose the volume you want for your modem from the Speaker Volume field and click Next.
7. In the Summary window, click Sign On to AOL Now to sign on immediately, or click Make More Changes to make additional changes.

Ok, if what rrcn doesn't work, go to Programs America Online, then look for the AOL System Information utility. It's got several tabs corresponding to different aspects of the system, like Network, Utilities, AOL Adapter. I'm going by memory so I can't recall exactly. There should be a Modem tab. |
