If you just want encryption on the drive so that no one may view it without a password look into TrueCrypt.

It has been a couple of years since I last used it, but the 2.x version Kremlin is available in an unlimited shareware version with all the features of the registered version, though the unregistered version only allows for one encryption routine: NewDES. NewDES can in numerical theory be hacked with enough computing power, though it has never has actually been proven to be hackable in real-life operation. In other words, it will deter the crackers and script kiddes, but it may not work against the CIA's or NSA's powerful decryption programs.

Kremlin can encrypt and compress files automatically and manually, allows for multipass file deletion automatically/scheduled/manually, and can even send encrypted emails. It has a TON of configurable options, so it may take awhile to learn all how to set and use each feature.

Kremlin operates in Win9x/Me/NT/2K/XP with no probs. If you're using WinNT/2K/XP, be sure to install the package while in administrator mode if you have multiple logon accounts.

Here is a download link:

If you want a commercial application, check out Kremlin 3.0. It offers support for a variety of encryption formats and methods.

I personally use BestCrypt these days. It does not encrypt single files. Instead, it builds encrypted container files that act as drive volumes. Not cheap, especially for multiple computer environments, but it works great for my purposes.

Hope this helps,
