Modem problem with Win98
Have a friend here who had someone come over and take out all of the background programs and it mysteriously wiped out the modem drivers. He installed again and it still wouldn't work...I just asked him if he uninstalled the drivers the first time and he said that he did.
It's a Sony Vaio running Win98, right now I don't have any other specs but will get soon.
Off the top of your heads, can anyone think of something that would cause it to do this?

Maybe if they uninstalled the modem again but in safe mode, it may/should re-recognize the modem and ask for the drivers (if nessesary)

Well that means he should reinstall the modem drivers again, then try again?

Mike, some ISP's have little background "helper" programs that are necessary for a modem to connect to the given ISP. It may be necessary for that (or those) background programs to be reinstalled in order to be able to connect.
You can check the modem in Control Panel and see if it returns a string of data, just to make sure it's functioning. On a couple of my machines, the external modems won't fuction upon restarting the machine until you do this. The fix is to delete the modem in the modem control panel and restart the machine. Windows then finds the drivers which are already lurking in the Windows folder, reinstalls them and I'm good to go. But only after I do the modem check thing.
It's an outside shot that this would work, I think a missing ISP applet is probably more likely the issue, but at least you can narrow the problem down this way. There's only two things in life. But I forget what they are.

He is going to go home and try it out. Hopefully tomorrow when I see him in school everything will be working fine.
