    Rights Anomaly within Windows XP

    System: Dell Latitude D610
    Hardware: Intel Centrino

Problem: I have a guy who recently received a new Dell Latitude D610 laptop and his user account has full administrator rights. However, when he needs to install new programs, in spite of having those necessary administrator rights, kept on getting nothing but "Access denied" errors. When he goes onto the Root Administrator (hence, the account named "Administrator") account, he is able to install "anything" onto his computer. How come, in spite that this user's account has full administrator rights, that he/she cannot install any new programs and/or use any installation programs? Why is this the case?

Sorry if I made this question confusing at first. I reworded it so that it would be more understandable.

    Please promptly respond. Thanks.
    A. Thats a pretty confusing post... you may want to clean it up and reword it...
    B. An attitude like "promptly respond" will most likely put off most potential responses

It sounds more like something got goofed where deleting that account and creating a new
one with full administrative priviledges would solve the problem.

I had an expierience with a similar issue. If the "administrator" account uses a password, (even though the user account has full administrator privlages), this will occur. I had to re-install Windows and set the administrator account WITHOUT a password. This allowed the "user" account to install any program at will, (providing you give said user full administrative rights).

How to fix the problem without re-installing Windows, however, I do not know.

There's some fun with that one alright. Trying to find an MS article on it can be a little tuff.
But, item someone suggested was making the Admin and user into one default without the
password even being there. That can give full access to addon accounts later.

Another beef I have with this is that this is a corporate-issued computer, meaning that only the company is allowed to rebuild the system, which is unlikely. I'm gonna have to have the company's IT department discuss this matter with me.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the IT department didn't set up a Group Policy to prevent installation of software by anyone but the actual administrator account. I don't think, since it is a corporate issued computer, that we should be discussing how to get around it.

if this is a corp issues computer then why did he bring it to you?? he needs to take it to his IT manager and let them deal with it. I'd also assume that if its corp issue they don't want him installing a bunch of junk on it for security reasons

    edit: I agree with jrsweger

Isn't that pretty much what Blitzkreig75 said? Why do you insist on repeating?

You will that the link above is strictly referring to your own private property. If you
tamper with corporate property they will most likely have a word with you.
