| Free Antivirus & Antispyware...
And the best (free) antivirus and antispyware programs are...
(List what you think)
I suppose I have a question also: Why is antivirus software and antispyware software separated? It's all the same to me; I want it off. So why doesn't someone just combine the two?
Thanks everyone.

IMO avast! 4.6 for home users is definately the best free antivorus software out there... as for anti-spyware I use MS Anti-Spyware Beta 1 and, even though it's made by M$, so far it works fine....

Avast is the best AV IMO
And I like spybot S&D, but it doesn't find as much spyware as Ad-Aware... |

Avast,AVG,spybot,and Adaware.
Actually this question belongs in the security section, but You will find those to be very common answers as well as a few more you will no doubt hear. http://www.techimo.com/forum/f80/index.html

I've heard that AVG uses minimal resources. In terms of resource consumption, how would you rate AVG, Avast!, and perhaps other software you prefer? |

I have been using AVG for several years now. There are nearly daily updates and I have never been hit by a virus. Doesn't seem to be a resource-hog either. |

Well I run AVG on a AMD 2700+ with over a gig of RAM .. So i ma not to concerned with resources atleast in terms of my Antivirus. As well I have not used Avast either so I can't comment.
I can say though, both Spybot and Adaware have monitoring software that can run in the background looking constantly for spyware, much like antivirus. I don't use anything like that, so it cuts down on my resource usage.

AVG takes about 20mb RAM...its nothing. 512mb RAM and i play BF2 fine(lowest settings maybe, but still...). I prefer AVG, i did use avast a while ago, but i didn't compare it(wasn't into it back then).
Make sure you have a good fire-wall, IMO the best FREE firewall is ZoneAlarm. The pro version is amazing, but im not looking for the extra bits lol.
I use MS anti-spyware, SpyBot, Adaware and cool web-shredder for anti-spyware.
EDIT- 20mb RAM, not 4mb(thats low 4mb...lol). Looked at only 1 of 4 proccesses by AVG!
