| Large file transfers in Win98
I noticed my Win98 has a problem with large transfers.
For example, I copied a backup directory (6.5 GB) to another drive. Explorer looked frozen after the transfer. When it finally closed, I reopened it and it was ok for a few seconds, then froze again. I can close it and use other apps, but the screen doesn't refresh for a while.
This trouble also occurs if I make the same files transfer to a network drive.
What can cause this ? Does 2k have the same problem ? |

Well, I copy directories that are bigger than 10GB to a backup hard disk without any problems on Win2k or XP... Actually, I've never had problems on Win98 either...

yes I noticed the same thing doing 5gig transfers over a net here - but actually after I was done - I found that working with the files from across the net allowed me to work quite quickly - [not your situation but] - I had a buggy 98 box that was being worked on and the files were on a w2k - kind of acting as a file server - the 98box kept crashing - but the files were always safe on the w2k box.

i had a problem with trying to transfer files over from win98 to a win2k machine. it would freeze as a few seconds
but now that i moved my whole home network (except my printer server) over to win2k i have no problems with file transfers
atuacally it was one of the main reasons i went over to win2k

I'm trying to go 2k too, but I'm having problems sharing the printer with another PC as I wrote in my SAD WIN2K EXPERIENCE thread. |

skuz i sort of had a problem like you did but found a small fix (atucally i was very lucky)
here is a post i did with surreals "why do people have printer servers at home" Quote:
Reason why I have one is because all my machines are running win2k except the printer server its running win 98. Why you say? One thing is we don't leave all our work machine computers on all the time, but the printer server computer stays on 24/7 so if anyone needs to print its there since my family is always up at different hours. Second I have an Epson stylus color 600. They don't make drivers for that printer with win2k. But win2k default load comes with Epson stylus 600/2 drivers. Which work just fine for some odd reason? I put win98 on the printer server because I hate winme and they only made drivers for win95/win98. Punks! I was looking forward to win2k drivers

| so i got lucky, every once in a while the printer will throw a fit with the win2k machines and start printing useless crap. all i have to do is delete the printer and add it and its good as new for a couple of months.

I deleted/reinstalled the printer many times. I'll make some more testing this weekend. Since I want to keep 2k, if it still doesn't work, I'll put the printer on the Win95 machine and share it. (goodbye speed) |

I read somewhere that SB Live! cards on some Via-based boards (ABit for sure) can have problems copying files over a certain size.
Sorry, can't remember where I saw it and can't find it right off...

Yes I read about this problem. My sound card is a SB16 PCI. The files transferred aren't corrupted, I just have to reboot to solve the problem. |

Can you transfer the files in SAFE mode where lots of drivers are not running, provided you aren't using the CD-ROM for anything it outta work better.
Perhaps you need a defrag on both discs prior to moving such large files to keep it from searching all over the disc. |
