Trouble upgrading to Win XP

I am running Windows 98SE and I am having fatal errors (blue screen errors) when I shutdown. I bought Windows XP Home Ed. upgrade. I tried to install it both as an upgrade and a clean install and I get the same results. It hangs up when it gets to windows setup. I called Microsoft and they think somethings wrong with the hardware. I had it checked, the computer is fine so I tried to install it in a different computer and got the same results. Can anyone help!

how did you check to make sure the hardware works? and is the different computer 100% different, or did you bring over any hardware from the other computer with it to test the install?
