Really disappointed with Acronis Ver. 8.

Acronis Backup has done a "stellar" (sarcastic) job of backing up my files. The user interface is easy to figure out and my wife who has a photography business and does a lot of work in Photoshop and hence backs up every day.
However, backing up is one thing...restoring is another. Last week she had a hd go out and after replacing it I figure no big deal, I'll just reimage the drive with the Acronis backup .tib files on her external hd.
Errors were encountered while reimaging the drive so I eventually gave up and decided to just reinstall Windows and Apps and then drag and drop data folders and files from the Acronis image. Even this was sporadic. Although I could "see" most of the folders that were supposed to be within the image, a lot of them were empty and the ones that were not encountered I/O errors when trying to copy them to the new hd. All in all it has been a nightmare and I would be hard pressed to recommend this software. I'm sure somehow this is user error but a user shouldn't have to have a crystal ball to see if backup software will work as it should.
Comments and/or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading.

acronis is very unreliable program from my experience as well. What I would recommend would be Symantec Ghost it works every time with-out any problems.

Now lets try to deal with your problem

have you tried acronis image explorer ? I assume that’s how u are able to see the folders in the image ?

can you tell me exactly what errors is it giving you when you are trying to copy the files to ur new HD ?

PLS be more specific on you hardware what new drive ? what OS ? a

Did you run the "check archive " feature after making the backup to verify it was ok?

Can't remember exactly right now but I think it was a "can't copy file due to I/O error"

This is what I found so far

Did you have any private folders ?

The issue pertains to Acronis preserving the original permissions on the files in the "Documents & Setting" folder and its child objects.

What you need to do is restore the whole image to a hard drive and then take ownership of it in Windows. Then you can create the image again and it will not have issues with you extracting data from it as another user.

Bear in mind that Windows XP Home users who select "Make The Folder Private" in the folders properties box

OR

XP Home users who choose to make their files private when they setup their user account for the first time are also affected by this issue.

Folders that are encrypted need to have the encryption removed before cloning if they are to be readable with the image mounted as a drive in another host install of Windows.

Resorting the image completely, booting it and logging in as the appropriate user also allows access to such files and folders.

What you can try as well is 3rd party software for extracting the image - this way get back some data at least !!

something like Winiso ?
