Thumbs down iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close!

A week ago I bought an Ipod Shuffle and installed the accompanying CD programs, Ipod Installer and iTunes, which seemed to work satisfactorily. After a couple of days I noticed the latest update AppVer: 6.0.4.2 (iTunes and Quicktime 7) and installed it. Since then iTunes crashes as soon as I click on it.

I have tried everything: uninstalling, redownloading and reinstalling, system restore, cleaning the registry, etc - all to no avail.

One suggestion I noted was to reinstall a Quicktimes 7 standalone and tried to download itfrom the Apple site, but when located it was combined with iTunes.

I would be grateful for any advice or suggestions. Thanks in anticipation.

Incidentally my machine has the following attributes for what it's worth:

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
    Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
    OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
    System Name HOME-AC4L2XKM25
    System Manufacturer AWARD_
    System Model AWRDACPI
    System Type X86-based PC
    Processor x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel ~3200 Mhz
    Processor x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel ~3200 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG, 10/03/2004
    SMBIOS Version 2.3
    Windows Directory F:\WINDOWS
    System Directory F:\WINDOWS\system32
    Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1
    Locale Australia
    Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)"
    User Name HOME-AC4L2XKM25\WH (Bill) Hann
Time Zone W. Australia Standard Time
    Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 128.57 MB
    Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
    Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
    Page File Space 1.22 GB
    Page File F:\pagefile.sys

I could send a copy of the error report text file if that would help. Unfortunately I lack the expertise to understand it, myself.

Not that I'm aware of, but a search for Quicktimes folders and files seems to suggest that there may be two or more installations. What do you think?

I'll email you with a screen shot of the first page of the search results.

    Thanks for your interest

    Itunes crash solved

Thanks for your email RayH it was encouraging.
Happily I tried the reinstallation of a standalone QuickTimes again and it worked!
I have an idea that it's got something about the parsing method used by the application that caused the problem, but it's only a guess.
Anyhow what I did this time was to do a search for QT folders and files which showed a list of 792 such. Then I went through and deleted any that were permitted then located and downloaded a standalone QT program. Although it was a QT 7 it was not quite the latest version but I went ahead and installed it anyway and bingo - success.

I hope that this helps anybody else with a similar problem.

There are at least 3 ways to uninstall a program. First, use its own uninstaller. Second, use the windows uninstaller under add/remove programs. Last, (and certainly not the best) manually delete every file / folder / registry key / temp file / shortcut etc... associated with the program. Be extremely careful with the last one. (backup first)

Uninstall QuickTime and itunes, then reboot and reinstall. I don't use itunes, so I can't offer much advice, but in general, if a program won't work, I dump it and try again.

Try system restore to a point before it started to give you that message.
If that doesn't do it, backup your downloaded songs, un/reinstall itunes and restore your music library (again, not familiar with itunes much)

    Talking iTunes problems fixed!!

Hey everyone, I successfully resolved the iTunes problem!!!
Here is what I did, hopefully it can help everyone else!

1:Uninstall iTunes, Quicktime and any other iPod software that may requie Quicktime.
2:Search your Local Disk Drive for files containing the word "quicktime". When it finds all the hundreds of files, go through and delete all the old temp/backup/permitted files.
3: Go to www.apple.com/itunes/download and download the iTunes and Quicktime combined download.
    4:Install iTunes/Quicktime combined pack.
5:Open iTunes, and VOILA!!!! Your iTunes problems are fixed. Please send all your donations to....lol. Although I wouldn't say no to a few donations...
Thanks everyone. Leave your thoughts and tell me whether this worked at my website, www.shcorporation.tk
    HAVE FUN!!!!!

    Still Not Working

Hey, i've been reading the other posts about this topic and i have tried all the solutions but none of the seem to work. I've uninstalled, reinstalled and deleted all old quicktime and itunes files but nothing seems to work. As soon as i try to open itunes it instantly replies iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I'm on XP home, e-mail address is jesusgod0@aol.com, please e-mail me if you need more info. Any help at all would be much appreciated!

    Thanks.

    Okay, but

I'm trying to go through your steps, man, but how can I get past number 2 if every time I uninstall QuickTime, it says "fatal error occurred during installation"?

And in answering the question above, no, if you uninstall iTunes, you won't lose your music.
